Among the Walls

Hong Kong, 2018

An ongoing series dedicated to capture the undiscovered beauty of existing Walled Villages in Hong Kong.

Walled Villages, also known as "Wai Tsuen" are mostly located in the New Territories in Hong Kong. They were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties by some Chinese indigenous communities. The giant walls served as a protection for themselves against other communities and pirates. Over time though they no longer need the protection, the culture within these villages somehow remain very different from the majority of this fast-paced city. In 2018 as I explored the villages, it's one of the most noticeable scenes that household/personal objects could easily be spotted on their shared roads.
